You HAVE To See Katy Perry's Beauty Evolution

I'll admit it: I'm a longtime Katy Perry fangirl — and for good reason. The singer has donned so many cool-girl hair and makeup looks, she's practically made eccentric beauty her M.O. And, as a beauty editor who oft sees the same looks time and time again, I'm forever grateful to her for keeping my work life interesting. After all, she's never been afraid of change, be that in her style, her hair, her makeup, even her personal life — and I love her for it.

It's hard to believe that she's been surprising us all for nearly a decade. That's right, she first hit the mainstream music scene in 2008 with her industry-crushing hit "I Kissed a Girl" — and she's kept us on our toes ever since. Between her epic wig collection and the unexpected lipstick shades she created with CoverGirl, we're always waiting with bated breath to see what's next.

In honor of Perry turning the big 3-2 tomorrow, we've rounded up our favorite beauty looks — further proof that she's always been the badass beauty chameleon we all know and love today.

In 2002, a fresh-faced Perry kept her makeup minimal — no makeup, makeup perfected, if we do say so — and her fringe wispy (a foreshadowing of the big bang trend of today, perhaps?).

This year also marked the beginning of Perry’s go-to look as we know it today. For much of the year — including at the 2008 MTV Music Video Awards, shown here — the pop singer stuck to a classic pin-up aesthetic: dark, bouncy curls, full lashes, and siren-red lips.

Perry kicked off 2009 with her first headline-making chop: a blunt bob with baby bangs. She paired the look with a shimmery smoky eye and magenta lip.

At the 2009 Grammy Awards, she went classic Hollywood glamour with retro pin-curl waves. She swiped on a bubblegum-pink lip to match her girly pink gown, naturally.

Later that year, the pop star attended a birthday party in L.A. wearing confetti-inspired eyeshadow of the neon-blue and green variety — a look that took the cake that night.

At the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, Perry proved she’s not afraid of a little color: She sported a mermaid-blue wig, bold cat-eye liner, and neon-yellow nails — a preview of the badass hair and makeup looks that would soon follow.

For a Today show performance a few months later, Perry traded in her bright wig for subtle streaks of fuchsia. Keeping to the candy theme, she also wore a matching fuchsia lipstick and metallic blue eyeliner.

Never one to shy away from a statement-making mani, Perry showed off her then-husband Russell Brand on nail art at the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards. She also added blue and purple to her mane.

At the 2011 launch of her fragrance, Purr, the star dyed her hair a soft orange-red hue — a complete departure for the singer. She tight-lined her lower lids with a shimmery copper hue to match. Meow.

In yet another shade shift for the star, Perry attended the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with pink-purple hair, violet eyeshadow, and a record-breaking headpiece.

For the 2011 American Music Awards, she twisted her pink strands into a sleek updo and accessorized it with an iridescent jewel embellishment. Her makeup was equally bold; she paired her flawless cat-eye with a creamy orange lipstick.

In Perry’s last hair switch-up of 2011, she attended a charity event with a chin-grazing cut and diffused, cotton-candy blonde hair. She kept with the overall softer vibe and left her makeup in neutral territory.

By the time the 2012 Grammy Awards came around, Perry was back to blue. Here, she was pictured with her post-performance crimped hair — and the throwback ’do is good. She sported different variations of the hair color for months afterward.

Perry’s high, multi-hued pony at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards would give a unicorn tail a run for its money. She wore an equally bright blue eyeshadow and fuchsia lip gloss.

A few months later, at the premiere of her movie Katy Perry: Part of Me, the starlet returned to her dark roots and soft, bouncy curls, only this time with hints of deep violet throughout. To add to the drama, she donned scarlet-red lips and bold lashes.

Looking radiant in every sense of the word, Perry attended the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event and debuted a more demure look: a loose chignon, glossy nude lips, and neutral eyeshadow.

At a press conference in 2013 for The Smurfs 2, the singer (who voiced the female lead, Smurfette) sported colorful accessories on her head and ears — which fit perfectly with the cartoon theme — and rocked a bright pink lip to boot.

Perry let her emerald-green ensemble take center stage during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, wearing her jet-black hair down and her makeup natural.

For the 2013 Met Gala, “PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” Perry paired her deep burgundy lip with full, voluminous curls.

The pop star headed to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a slicked-back ponytail, subtle mauve lipstick, and — in case you need any more proof of her fearlessness — a silver-and-gold grill.

At an event in early 2014, she sported an A-line bob — that is, the cut's layers got longer toward her face — which put her rosy lip color on full display.

Two months later, Perry stopped by Jimmy Kimmel's show with a hair color she’d yet to wear before: green. The hue looked great on her glowing complexion, and she took the entire look up a notch with a bright pink lipstick.

In one of the most memorable moves in 2014 MTV Video Music Awards history, the singer showed up wearing a remarkably similar outfit to Britney Spears circa 2001, only this time the look was paired with wispy, straight-across bangs and a brick-red lipstick.

Though Perry had dipped her toes into the purple-hair-color pool, the 2015 Grammy Awards saw her in a lighter iteration: lavender. This time, she paired the dye job with a shiny nude lip and a smoked-out cat-eye — and she’s never looked chicer.

Proving she can do no wrong, Perry stepped out at the 2015 Met Gala with a super-short pixie cut (which turned out to be just a wig, but nonetheless she looked drop-dead cool). She also sported dangling nail jewelry that read, “Moschino.”

For the first time since hitting the scene, Perry rocked a subtle ombré look in August 2015. It started at her dark brown roots, then faded into a soft caramel hue. She paired it with a deep brown lipstick — a trend that would soon spread like wildfire throughout Hollywood.

In late 2015, Perry channeled her inner Jessica Rabbit with this warm, auburn-red hair color and glimmering gold shadow. (The only thing missing was the floor-length red gown.)

At the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, Perry looked straight out of a '60s beauty advertisement. Her bouffant hair was swept up half-way, and her bangs were parted in the middle.

In a move that would freak even the most experienced makeup artist, Perry bleached her eyebrows less than an hour before walking the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala — letting her midnight-black lips, beehive hair, and violet eyeshadow steal the show instead.

At a dinner over the 2016 Cannes Film Festival weekend, Perry looked killer with a sleek, pulled-back updo and siren-red lips.
