There's a lot that can be said about our personal love affairs with denim. From strong opinions (to wash or not to wash?) to nostalgia ('90s wide legs, anyone?) to emotions (rips in the crotch, and the tear-filled mourning sesh that follows), our complex relationship with denim is the sartorial equivalent to our dating history. Old loves that never die (see tattered boyfriend jeans), new loves that come and go (remember colored denim?) — we've been with them all. And, with the variety of styles in which they come — from Pollock-splatted carpenter pants to artfully destroyed, acid-wash mom jeans — the denim dating pool is plentiful.

But, there are a few standby styles that we always come back to: dark skinnies, worn-in boyfriends, and high-rise leg-lengtheners. So, we've partnered with the loyal denim mainstay American Eagle Outfitters to test-drive their classic fall iterations. Up ahead, see how six R29 staffers take to task in making these trusted go-tos work with their personal styles, while dishing on their own relationships with the beloved twill. What can we say? Denim makes us feel feelings.

    Chloe Daley, associate lifestyle editor

Test driving: Sky High Jegging in Faded Black

How I'm styling 'em today: "I'm a self-professed Francophile. I love the simplicity and effortless look of French girls, and I'm trying to embody their spirit with this look. A striped shirt with black skinny jeans? So easy, classic, and always on trend. I topped off this outfit with my trademark accessories — a head scarf and vintage baubles — to make it my own."

My everyday style: "Jane Birkin meets Tilda Swinton (I wish)."

Why I wear denim on the reg: "I write about everything from interior tricks to DIY projects to food trends. Since DIY projects can get experimental and messy at times, I need to be in jeans that I don't mind roughing up, whether I'm painting or testing out food recipes. They're part of the charm of my jeans, I think!"

My first pair: "As a teen, I had a pair of black jeans I just thought were the coolest. I thought I was so French, ha! Super low rise."

My jeans rotation: "In the summer I'm a big fan of culottes, but when fall comes I always reach for jeans. Pants are my MO."

My dreamiest denim: "I have two pairs of denim that I love equally — both so magical. The first is a perfectly ripped pair of light, holey-at-the-knees boyfriends. They're beyond tattered, and I love wearing them with fancy heels. The other is a pair of basic blue skinnies that I cut the bottoms off at the ankle for a frayed look. Slipping them on is like a second skin."

The verdict: "These gray skinnies felt like butter. I'm a huge lover of high-waisted styles, and they hit at just the right spot. Moving around was no problem — I felt so comfortable."

    Bobby Schuessler, senior market editor

Test driving: Skinny Jeans in Light Sponge

How I'm styling 'em today: "Even though I'm not going back to school, back to school was always my favorite time of year (from a fashion sense), so I decided to bring some of that feeling to this look with a sweater, button-down shirt, and a rad backpack. It's like the grown-up way to do back to school."

My everyday style: "Classic meets sporty."

Why I wear denim on the reg: "I scout the fashion and accessories market to bring the best of the best products to our highly curated shopping content, and although I have a million pairs of jeans in my closet, I only stick with two styles of jeans because they work best for me. I like how they fit and look with everything in my closet. I think it's important to find 'the one' — that one style that just works for you, rather than having a slew of styles just to have, that don't necessarily work best for your specific body type."

My denim uniform: "I love pairing denim with basics for a cool, casual, all-American vibe. There's nothing better than a white or black tee with a pair of jeans. I also like the idea of mixing denim for an updated take on the Canadian tuxedo — so, a denim jacket and jeans."

My first pair: "My first pair of jeans had to have been a pair from OshKosh B'gosh when I was three or four years old — acid-wash with elastic at the bottom and a little loose. At the time, these were very on trend (I'm sure I was the talk of the sandbox). And, what's even funnier is that this style of jean is SO in right now — so I was basically 25 years ahead of the fashion curve."

R.I.P. my _______: "Favorite pair of jeans (ever!). I was on a flight to Brazil for work this year, and I sat down in my seat and noticed my jeans had a huge hole right in the crotch. How embarrassing. I was depressed the entire plane ride. But, I turned the beat around and slipped into a just-as-cool pair when I arrived in South America. Let's just say, I survived."

The verdict: "These slightly distressed, faded skinny jeans will be my new fall go-to. I don't have anything quite like them in my closet yet, and I'm excited to try them with graphic pullovers and sweaters."

    Brittnee Cann, QA manager

Test driving: Hi-Rise Jegging in Medium Worn

How I'm styling 'em today: "This tank is perfect for these jeans because the tail hem shows off the high-waisted fit in the front. I love a menswear shirt, both as a layering piece and the way it's making a comeback as a waist accessory. And, a leather jacket is like the 'jeans' of outwear in that it works with any look."

My everyday style: "Oversized modern meets nostalgic teenage punk."

Why I wear denim on the reg: "The women at R29 get Dressed with a capital D. It's an inspiring place to work, for sure, but since I spend most of the day sitting in front of a screen making sure that everything our engineering teams release is bug-free, comfort is still my first priority. Jeans have to be soft and a little stretchy in order to be comfortable."

My denim uniform: "I am a very uniform-style wearer of jeans. I wear the same high-waisted, black, cropped style time and time again. You really can't miss building a look from that as a starting point — they're an easy blank canvas, even for footwear. A slightly cropped style is great for both ankle boots and flats alike."
