Why You Need This Dress That’s Also A Shirt, Vest, & Jacket

Photographed by Nicolas Bloise.
While we can often identify the marks of a good piece of clothing — quality, proper fit, timeless aesthetic — it's not usually that it's a one-size-fits-most, worn-every-which-way wonder. (Years of infomercial-viewing taught us how to become skeptical of the do-it-all fashion item.) But, artist and designer Alyson Fox achieves that mythical piece in the release of her new line. Already a purveyor of home-goods and accessories, Fox's take on apparel is from a practical, multi-functional standpoint.
"The clothes are designed to be both modular within the collection as well as interchangeable across collections to come," she explains. And, simply put, that means her small, carefully-crafted lineup — two dresses, three tops, a skirt, shorts, tunic, and slacks to be exact — is meant to be worn in a multitude of ways. For instance, a button-front maxi dress (as seen on our own style director Connie) becomes a shirt when tucked into the waistband of a skirt or a vest when worn partially unbuttoned over trousers, or a light, maxi-length jacket, assuming weather allows.

In sticking with the theme of ease, Fox has aimed to remove one of the most difficult tasks in clothes shopping: selecting your size. The offerings in the Austin designer's line come intended to fit a size two through eight (some through size six), which doesn't quite make it a one-size-fits-all garment, but it cuts out some of the guess work at least.
Other pieces in Fox's "hand-woven, hand-printed, hand-sewn" collection include billowy, button-down tops, tunics, and waist-tied skirts that are intended to translated into a variety of styling options. Of course, for you throw-on-and-go types, they can certainly be worn alone, too.
The collection will continue to be released in small batches twice a year — which is good since it might take you a while to exhaust all your options from this first release. Click over to check out all the pieces available now, and watch below for a demonstration.
