Topshop Redefines The Art Of Winter Layering

Topshop doesn't do things by halves. Last year’s Unique runway show took place in Regent’s Park, a location that many of us thought couldn’t be better. How wrong we were.
This season, the world's first virtual-reality runway show was held in the architecturally stunning location of the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. And, as the fashion world descended into the cavernous space (much to the bemusement of tourists watching from the floor above), expectations were high.
The high-street retailer’s 37-piece collection hit the ground running with an enticing selection of coats, jackets, gilets, and mini bomber jackets — all in shades of gun-metal gray, French navy, and camel. The silhouettes were relaxed and oversized, which on first glance required expert layering skills to recreate. Miniskirts were teamed with oversized shirts, cropped jumpers, and boxy jackets just slipping off the shoulder, while belts helped redefine body contours.
And, though this is an autumn/winter collection, the brand wasn't afraid to play with hemlines. Eyebrows were raised at one particular pair of quilted short shorts. While thigh-high suede boots in cranberry and pale gray brought smiles to many editors’ faces.
Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls)” provided the rather fitting musical accompaniment to the show’s finale, because while we can’t get our hands on any of these items quite yet, we can start using the styling tricks and layering tips we learned. Who knows? By the time these looks hit stores, we really might be running the world? Or, at least dressing like we do.
