"I rinse my hair in the shower every morning with water, comb it, part it to the side, and let air dry. I rarely use shampoo or product. I keep it simple."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love the volume, the ability to play with its texture. My hair has its own personality, which is great since it always stands out. I don't like when it gets too frizzy, though."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"After washing my hair, I always apply argan oil in it while it's still wet, and finish with curl mousse before the blowdry."

"

What is your best advice for curly girls?

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"The best part about having curly hair, especially big curly hair like mine, is that you stand out in a crowd. I can be anywhere at any time and my friends can immediately spot me because of my hair! The downside of having curly hair is that, well, I stand out. I don't always like the attention — especially when people take it upon themselves to run their fingers through my hair without permission. Rude!"

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"For the most part, I try to have fun with it. My natural curls are very small, tight curls. From time to time, I'll wear my hair just like that. But, usually I use a curling iron to make my curls bigger and shinier. I have been practicing, though, with using less heat in my hair so as not to damage it in the long run."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"I tend to not straighten it so much anymore, as I might have done in high school and college. I damaged it with all of the heat I was directly applying to my hair, and it made me kind of sad. You might see it straight once or twice in a year — if you are lucky."

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"My best advice for curly girls is to be patient. I know that when I made the decision to stop straightening my hair so much and start embracing my curly hair, I was a little frustrated because I had to completely change the way I was treating my hair and I didn't really know where to start. I was initially discouraged, but I kept reading blogs such as Curly Nikki and I read so many testimonials and realized that I wasn't alone in the world of curly hair. Once I understood that my curls were unique to me, I started experimenting with different products and routines and found what worked best for me. Now, I love my hair and wouldn't trade it for anything."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love how my curls have become pretty synonymous with my personality. I think of myself as an exotic bird in an urban cage — as in modern and wild, but still very grounded with lots of wanderlust. I think the nature of my 'fro is very resonant with that idea."

"I don't love how many strangers ask to touch my hair. Some don't even ask, and just dive right in. It's flattering, I suppose, but also a little weird. Likewise, I can never be incognito. And, I can't wear beanies."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"My hair has a mind of its own, and I let it do what it wants. My style is a lot of black, leather, and sparkle, so it softens things up a bit. I wash it twice a week, including a deep conditioning, and cut tufts here and there when it gets too unruly."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Never again! Straightened it for 12 years and finally stopped. I spent a year in Paris and saw so many gorgeous girls with gorgeous curls. I went au naturel and I've never been happier."

What products do you swear by?
"I live on Organix Tea Tree Mint shampoo and conditioner. It smells incredible and is really moisturizing. I also have an olive oil conditioning spritzer that I spray daily for extra hydration."

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Stop straightening your hair! The word 'tendril' originated from 'tender,' and curls deserve to be treated as such. It's so damaging to your hair's health, and we should really embrace the beautiful manes we have."

Alexandra Evjen, 29, stylist

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love the body and volume that comes with my curls. I love that it gets even bigger with humidity. In my book, the bigger the hair, the better. I used to hate my curls and always straighten my hair, but I've really learned to embrace it."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"If I'm going to wear my hair naturally curly, I always flip my head upside down in the shower and scrunch my curls while I rinse out my conditioner. I don't let a towel or a comb touch my hair at all. Keeping my head down, I apply several different products: a leave-in conditioner, a gentle mousse, sea-salt spray and root boost. I gently diffuse my hair on the lowest speed and heat setting, keeping my head upside down until my hair is completely dry. I spray some hairspray and then gently separate my curls by shaking my head upside down."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Yes, about once every other week to change things up a bit."

What's your frizz-fighting secret?

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Embrace your curls and try to avoid using heat as much as you can."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love that my morning routine is pretty simple. I don't love that wearing hats, even loose berets, in the winter squashes my curls."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"The cut is key, and maintaining it. Terra at Mudhoney on Sullivan Street gives me a great cut. I see her every eight weeks. I recently started using Bumble and bumble Surf Shampoo and Conditioner, and I love the texture they create. I wet and condition my hair most days and use shampoo maybe every other week so that the styling products build up in my hair and there's minimal frizz. After showering, I use a dab of DevaCurl Light Defining Gel and work it through the ends and then air-dry. If I ever need a touch-up during the day, I'll use a bit of whatever product I happen to have. I like Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom, Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil, and sea-salt spray."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"I don't enjoy the process of blowdrying it straight myself so I only wear it straight after haircuts. The blowout usually lasts for a couple of days. It's fun for a change every now and then, but I prefer the curls."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"My hair was quite long for years. I cut it about a year ago, which felt wonderful once I got over the shock. After the cut, my look was so changed that it felt like I had a new wardrobe, though that didn't keep me from shopping. With my shorter, curlier hair, I began wearing a darker palette with more solids and some abstract and animal prints. When I had longer hair with looser curls, my look was a little more romantic with floral prints and a lot more pink.
"

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Air-dry whenever possible. Embrace your curls and let them go wild."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"What I love most is photographing my hair silhouette in the evening sunlight. There isn't a thing not to love."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"I cannot say that I do much to maintain my mane. It is as easy as picking it out twice a day, keeping it clean and hydrated."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Once every blue moon."

What products do you swear by?
"Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla moisturizing leave-in conditioner and Carol's Daughter Hair Milk refresher spray to control frizz, add shine, and add moisture."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"I have used my hair as an accessory for years. It obviously has a huge influence on my overall appearance. I have always been very in tune with shapes and silhouettes, and I firmly believe that there must be a balance between hair and wardrobe. Not every cut of clothing goes with every style of hair and vice versa. I also believe that the bigger the hair, the less color you need in your wardrobe."

What is your best advice for curly girls? "If the hair fits...."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love that my husband thinks it's sexy. I don't love that my hair is thick so it takes two hours to dry naturally."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Yes, I wear it straight sometimes to change my look, and when I don't have the freedom of waiting two hours for it to dry."

What products do you swear by?
"Kiehl's Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo and Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Repairative Hair Pak, which I use as a regular conditioner, both packed with lots of moisture as my hair tends to be dry. Also, a little bit of Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious Creme for fine curls after the shower."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"I think you can get away with any style with curly hair. But, I do like the juxtaposition of the casual curls with a sleek and sophisticated outfit like a pencil skirt, blouse, and heels.
"

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Condition!"

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"What I love about my hair is that it matches my personality! It's spontaneous, quirky, and incredibly unpredictable. I can dress it up or dress it down. Although, when it's raining, it has a mind of its own — humidity is the enemy."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"My routine changes often, depending on the style and which products I have to work with. At night, I try to leave it out to make sure the curls keep their natural shape."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Yes! I'm all about the straight! Too much straightening can damage it, so remember to use a heat protector."

What products do you swear by?
"I swear by anything John Frieda and just about anything with coconut in it."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"My hair definitely adds a lot of 'bubble' to my personality. People tend to remember me as the girl with the hair — it's an extension of me."

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Rock them proudly! Take care of them! Love them, they'll love you back!"

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"Having options — being able to wear it curly, wavy, or straight. I don't love sometimes looking like Medusa."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"I wash it every other day or so; otherwise, it dries out and frizzes. I generally let it go natural, though occasionally I'll run an iron over it once or twice to mellow it out."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Stick straight? No. Not since high school, when all I wanted was that silky straight mane. Glad I got over that."

What products do you swear by?
"First off, Bumble and bumble leave-in rinse-out conditioner has been a staple of mine for years. Also, I just started using René Furterer Myrrhea shampoo, conditioner, and silkening fluid — pretty fabulous stuff."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"I don't fuss too much. I just kind of let it all come together. If I want a sleeker look, I throw my hair up in a top knot. Oftentimes, I throw a hat on to round it all out."

What is your best advice for curly girls? "Embrace those curls, go with it — they add a lot of character. You're lucky!"

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love that I have the option to wear it curly or straight. Takes an hour to blowdry it straight, and water makes it curly again. I don't love that sometimes complete strangers ask if they can touch my hair. Some just grab a handful like it's okay."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"I comb conditioner though damp hair with my fingers. When it's dry, I separate the curls by hand to get more volume. I pull and scrunch and play with it 'til I'm happy."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Once or twice a year, usually on my birthday."

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"I love how wild it is. I feel most myself when it's big and crazy. I hate when it dreads up in the winter from scarves and coats."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"Bed head every day! I'm pretty low-maintenance and try to let it be as natural as possible. I usually brush it out with my fingers in the shower and let it dry naturally. I wash it only once a week and will wet/condition it other days."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"Never!"

What products do you swear by?
"I don't really use a lot of product because I like for my hair to feel natural and be free. But, when I do, I use Mesh Curl Cream by ICON for curl definition. Also my little secret for dryness is S.W. Basics 'cream.' I know it's not a hair product, but it does wonders for split ends."

What's your frizz-fighting secret?
"S.W. Basics 'cream.' It has shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. Pretty much the dream team for moisture."

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"Don't try to tame your curls. Let it be wild and free."

Tanaz Henry, 18

What do you love about your curly hair? Anything you don't love?
"What I love about curly hair is that it's unique and crazy. I feel like curly hair really embodies being a free spirit as well as being comfortable in your own skin and with your ethnicity. There isn't anything I don't love about curly hair."

Tell us about your hair-care routine. How do you take care of and style your curls?
"My daily hair routine is washing with a sulfate-free shampoo and using a vitamin-rich conditioner. I never brush my hair — I just diffuse it and then add a cream or gel product. I try not to shampoo my hair more than twice a week, because over-washing strips curls of their moisture and makes your hair look dull and dry."

Do you ever wear your hair straight?
"I very rarely wear my hair straight. I really don't feel like myself when my hair is tamed."

What products do you swear by?
"I swear by Deva Curl light defining gel. It really adds extra bounce and shine to my curls. I also love Curls Creme Brule whipped curl cream. Not only does it smell great, it also adds a touch of moisture that doesn't weigh my hair down."

How does your hair influence the rest of your look?
"My hair is able to add a wild and urban feel to my style, no matter what I'm wearing. I am very involved in street fashion and take inspiration from the early and mid '90s. Because most of what I wear is baggy and bold, my hair really injects a sense of subtle femininity into my daily look.
"

What is your best advice for curly girls?
"My best advice for girls with curly hair is to love your curls and embrace them! Curly hair is beautiful and unique."
