After years of provocative campaigns showcasing semi-clad youth in a host of compromising, semi-pornographic positions, we were beginning to wonder if American Apparel still had the ability to astound us. And, then this T-shirt showed up, and once again, the brand's shock value has skyrocketed.
The shirt is part of a larger collaboration with The Ardorous, which is explained by American Apparel as "an all-female online art platform curated by Petra Collins, a Toronto-born artist." The site goes on to say that Collins "began her infatuation with photography at age 15 and became an American Apparel retail employee around the same time. She creates portraits exploring female sexuality and teen girl culture." As longtime fans of Collins' work (remember the incredible "vomit pink" editorial she shot for us?), we're thrilled to see her teaming up with the brand. But, to be totally honest, we kind of wish the T-shirt featured one of Collins' portraits of Tavi, or maybe a screen print of one of her polaroids?
So, seeing as we're a bit speechless, we're going to leave the commenting up to you. Would you wear it?
