Stella McCartney has never been much for the fantastical — sure, her separates and suiting are chock-full of wit (something you're usually hard-pressed to find among work wear), but if you can't dash off to work in it and pop by a museum party later for a drink, Stella's not interested.
So, it's always interesting to see how McCartney flexes her design muscles to make those staples — a good suit, a classic sheath dress, proper pants — utterly irresistible. Her usual trick of the trade is through patterns, and this season's citrus and grocery-bag plaid was a textured, reptile pattern, muted florals, and lace — a much sweeter, safer (albeit more boring) take on spring. A parade of cocktail dresses will prove to be go-tos for the young Hollywood set, and the cap-sleeved viscose layering shirts feel totally fresh layered under oversized suits and silky midi-skirts. It seems like McCartney's working woman has decided to tone things down for the season (and is wearing her shower shoes to the office, too), but we're hopeful she'll get her groove back next fall.
