The Absolute Best Summer Shorts, According To US!

Our collection of denim shorts has a habit of outgrowing our closet space. The summer staple is one we tend to wear at any time, for every occasion, and with practically any other item from our closet, so we can't resist constantly scooping up a new pair (or DIYing them, if that's your style).
But, since quality trumps quantity — and your closet doesn't come with infinite space — we're sharing our personal favorite jorts that we can't survive without this summer. We spilled on the pairs that make our legs look long, our butts look great, and are the perfect denim-cotton weight. Yes, we feel pretty strongly about our jorts. Read on to find out why.

"Generally speaking, I loathe shorts — or at least how they decidedly do not do much for my legs. But this pair from J.Crew is surprisingly flattering, not schlubby — they're not too short, not too heavy, and they make my legs look nicer than my DIY cutoffs do. A qualified win!"

"My absolute favorite denim shorts can't be found anymore, since it's made from a pretty old-school '90s style from Lee. It's high-waisted, has absolutely no stretch, and is perfectly thick.
"For shorts I can buy now, I love Paige Denim's shorts. They're not too short, not too long, and are that inky-black denim that looks great now, but will look better once washed and faded. Just don't wear them with heels like in this photo... flats and sneakers, all the way!"

"These are perfect. They're not too short but still short enough to make my legs look longer. I think the real secret is that they're just a little looser than the average pair (I buy up a size, always), so they make my butt look good without looking trashy."

"It may seem like an obvious choice, but I'm devoted to my Gap sexy boyfriend shorts. I've had them around two years now and with every wash they are softer and more deliciously lived-in. Plus, I love being able to roll them to different lengths!"

"Put simply, these do something magical to your bum. Plus, is there anything more Americana than vintage Levi's? The best pairs feature that quality, thick Levi's denim, a form-fitting but not-too-skimpy cut, and the Levi's natural leather tag. Classic!"

"Topshop's pretty embroidered pair are an instant festival fashion fix — team with a tee, sneakers, and a pair of Le Specs, and voilà! (Plus, they're get for those of us with a disproportionate waist-to-hips ratio!)

"I love these because they feel like good shorts with a bad attitude. The high waist and paisley print are all business, but the mini cut and frayed edges say 'ready to party.' While printed pants are really in right now, baroque plus denim is always a win."

"So far these shorts have lasted me two summers and I have another pair waiting for when they finally wear out. When you are as short as I am, you need to be able to play with the length of the inseam — and the cuff on these shorts allow for that. You can wear them longer with the frayed ends showing, or you can cuff the shorts for a shorter but more-polished look. I wear them cuffed a lot because of how short my legs are, but I also love the versatility. There is nothing more comfortable to wear on those warm summer days where you just want to relax outside."

"Shorts and I are not usually friends — something about my proportions and the way conventional jean shorts are cut does not make for a flattering look. Then along came this magical pair of jorts from Madewell and my summer wardrobe was forever changed. What I like best about these is that they are cut long, so you can wear them at a mid-length, or you can roll them up to your preferred length. I've tried this in the past with other shorts, and for some reason they were inexplicably tapered, making it impossible to actually roll. Blessedly, these are straight cut, so you can roll 'em on up without worrying about cutting off the circulation to your thighs in the process."

"The moment the weather heats up, I'm the first to relegate my pants to the pack of the closet. But, because ripped jorts aren't exactly office-appropriate, I rely on this chambray pair to get me through the week. Not only are they polished enough for our office's liberal dress code (!), but they look great with a light sweater & strappy sandals for anything the weekend brings. Their unabashed Joey Potter vibe doesn't hurt, either."
