With all the recent brouhaha over lipsticks and possible health effects, it makes sense that we all want to be a little more aware of what we are putting on our mouths (and, by default, into our bodies). Problem is, most beauty companies don't invite you into the kitchen to see how the sausage is made, so to speak. Or at least they didn't, until now.
Bite Beauty, an all-natural Canadian brand at the forefront of the healthy cosmetics movement, is taking the concept of transparency to a whole other level with their new Lipstick Lab. Located in their first freestanding shop, the SoHo lab allows customers to customize their own lipstick, from the color all the way down to the scent. Lipstick lovers choose from an array of pre-mixed pigments, which they can then combine to create a distinct new hue. Not sure what you want? One of the delightful and lovely store clerks — Camille and Stephanie — are happy to apply the colors for you and help you pick what suits you best.
The pigments come in handy little pastilles that they then melt down for you and mix together to create your shade. Next, it's time to pick your scent: superfruit, violet, cherry, or mint. Another quick mix to blend the scent in, and then the molten lip hue is poured into metal lipstick bullets and placed on a frigid cooling plate to harden. Once they've solidified, they're placed in a plastic case and you've got yourself a brand new signature lip hue.
A custom lipstick costs $28 (regular Bite Beauty Luminous Crème Lipsticks ring in at $24) and the whole process takes under 10 minutes to do. The store is in pop-up phase right now, and will be undergoing a mini-makeover later this summer before opening the doors on their permanent shop in early fall. The brand is hoping to offer even more customization to customers once the shop is more established, including different texture options and finishes, as well as allowing them to be more hands-on with the actual creation of the lipsticks.
We had so much fun creating our own shade — a vibrant coral-red, scented with superfruit — that we highly recommend you guys check this one out. The lab is open six days a week (closed on Mondays) and you don't need an appointment to stop by. They also rent the space out for group events. Bridal showers, anyone?
