Well this has killed our Friday buzz: Alexander McQueen has announced that it will not be staging a show at Paris Fashion Week in March. Quelle horreur!
In fairness there is a pretty good reason behind this decision, namely that the fashion house's creative director Sarah Burton will be on maternity leave. The awards-laden designer, who is expecting twins, will swap Paris for sleepless nights and baby sick at home in London with her new family.
Alexander McQueen's usual catwalk spectacular will be replaced with a low-key presentation for about 100 editors and buyers on March 5. It’ll then be business as usual come spring/summer '14, with Alexander McQueen returning to its usual OTT. runway theatrics.
Burton is not the first heavy-hitter designer to put her family ahead of a catwalk show. Céline cancelled its autumn/winter '12 catwalk show in order take pressure off Phoebe Philo, who was pregnant with her third child at the time.
McQueen's catwalk extravaganza hiatus is not the only shake-up to the usual fashion calendar, though. Peter Som and Chris Benz are among those reported to be taking a season off from New York Fashion Week, while RiRi, Tom Ford and L'Wren Scott are newbies on the London schedule. We simply can't keep up!
