How Does This Make Sense? Modern Family Debuts A…Nail Polish?

If you're the kind of girl who prefers a little pop culture with your nail polish, 2012 has been your year. Movie tie-ins have been going gangbusters, with color collections inspired by
The Hunger Games
, Skyfall, and The Amazing Spider-Man popping up on tips and toes nationwide. Now the small screen is getting in on the action, albeit in some unexpected ways. This week, Deborah Lippmann announced a Girls collaboration, and if you're surprised by that, try to wrap your mind around a forthcoming Nicole by OPI collection inspired by…Modern Family.

Yep, come January, you'll be able to check out 14 shades of Modern Family polishes, all of which aim to "capture the show's colorful personalities." In a press release, Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products, cited the show's loyal following as the reason for the tie-in. "In partnering with Nicole by OPI, we’re not only able to reach our show’s large fan base, but deliver a product that captures the trend-forward elements and unique characteristics of the series," he said. Naturally, OPI's signature puns make an appearance. Think along the lines of I Do De-Claire (a frosty rose), What's the Mitch-uation? (a metallic cobalt), and Stand by Your Manny — a creamy cornflower blue whose hue makes us overlook the groaner of a name.

Sure, the colors are cool, but to be honest, we're scratching our heads over the concept. No offense to the Emmy-winning show, but this collab doesn't seem the most obvious fit. A Girls polish quartet might not be a no-brainer, but the modern New Yorker slant of the show means we actually could see ourselves getting a pedicure (and or comparing nail art) alongside Lena Dunham's characters. But Modern Family isn't exactly a trend-setting show in the style world. Taking style cues from Jay Pritchett a.k.a Ed O'Neill? Kind of a stretch.
While we love comedy and appreciate a good glitter polish, could this be a sign that nail polish tie-ins are — to borrow from a television classic — jumping the shark? Or could this week's announcements be the beginning of sitcom-inspired manicures to come? (In that case, we wouldn't necessarily turn down an Arrested Development tie-in.) Either way, if you can't wait to wear a little Modern Family on your digits, the polishes will be available for $7.99 each next month — just in time for the show to possibly pick up another Golden Globe.
