Are those run-of-the-mill seasonal activities bumming you out? Well, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, both Sufjan Stevens and The Polyphonic Spree are hosting holiday variety shows at The Fonda Theatre that are sure to send your senses into overdrive. Plus, we're totally skipping the mall, in lieu of trunk shows, flea markets, book signings, and lectures where we'll be picking up more personal gifts for our loved ones (and avoiding the sorry-I-got-you-socks-again spiel). All in all this week is shaping up to be a completely unconventional countdown to Christmas — and, quite frankly, we wouldn't have it any other way!

Sufjan Stevens, The Quirkiest Christmas Caroler
We all know that Sufjan Stevens is a pretty mystical man, but we've yet to hear of anything quite like his Christmas Sing-A-Long. Tonight's $20 event is described as "the Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice," so expect some wild moments — including inflatable unicorns, carols from his festive ten-volume discography, and his giant “Wheel of Christmas.” Things are about to get weird around here.
When: Tuesday, December 4, 7 p.m.
Where: The Fonda Theatre, 6126 Hollywood Boulevard (between North El Centro Avenue and North Gower Street); 323-464-0808.

Meet The Woman Behind The Covetable L.A.-Based Brand A.L.C.
When Andrea Lieberman announced back in '09 that she started designing ready-to-wear clothing and jewelry, we knew it was only a matter of time before celebs came calling. Lo and behold, her collections are hit after Hollywood-approved hit. The former stylist is stopping by Intermix tomorrow to sip on Laurel Hardware-mixed cocktails and meet her fashion-savvy customers. And, if you spend more than $500 on her exclusive trunk-show offerings, you'll save $50. All together now: OMG.
When: Wednesday, December 5, 5 to 7 p.m.
Where: Intermix, 110 South Robertson Boulevard (near Alden Drive); 310-860-0113.

Ooga Booga Continues Attract The Coolest Cats
Matt Connors' most recent publication, A Bell is a Cup, was published in conjunction with the exhibition Impressionism held at MoMA PS1 in NYC. Now the author has taken the book on tour to SoCal, stopping at one of R29's fave L.A. boutiques, Ooga Booga. The tome is actually the first-ever comprehensive gathering of his work to date, and includes texts by Peter Eleey, Michel Leiris, Gertrude Stein, and Jack Spicer. Have an art brat on your gift list? Consider that present purchased!
When: Wednesday, December 5, 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Ooga Booga, 943 North Broadway #203 (between West College Street and Bamboo Lane); 213-617-1105.

The Polyphonic Spree Gets In On The Christmas Fun
Apparently, holiday variety shows are all the rage. After you scope out Stevens' event, come back to The Fonda Theatre for another festive fete, this time with The Polyphonic Spree. The party is entirely kid-friendly, so bring your wee niece or nephew along for instant awesome-aunt points. Between the live performance from the choral symphonic pop-rock band, seasonal films, and delicious treats, this will likely be the best way to usher in the most wonderful time of the year.
When: Thursday, December 6, 8 p.m.
Where: The Fonda Theatre, 6126 Hollywood Boulevard (between North El Centro Avenue and North Gower Street); 323-464-0808.

Get An Education, Sans Homework And Tests
Held on the second Saturday of every month at an elementary school, the Silver Lake Art, Craft, and Vintage Flea Market is a can't-miss for those looking to invest in one-of-a-kind gifts. And, feel free to skip the juice box and peanut butter and jelly sandwich — this event comes equipped with some of the city's best food trucks. We used to hate going to school on Saturdays (a.k.a. detention), but this baby changes everything.
When: Saturday, December 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Micheltorena Elementary School, 1511 Micheltorena Street (near West Sunset Boulevard); 323-467-0623.

Meet The Man Who Will Never Settle For Snoozy Decor
When the quirky Jonathan Adler talks, we listen. His eccentric designs are gifting gold, and we can't help but swoon over his eye-catching sensibilities. So, come Sunday, we'll be booking it to the Skirball Center to hear what he has to say about his latest style bible, 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life. A cross between a decor guide and a self-help book, this tome is total coffee table material.
When: Sunday, December 9, 2:30 p.m.
Where: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard (near Skirball Center Drive); 310-440-4500.
