L.A.'s 13 Most Polished Fashion Publicists Work Their 9-To-5 Style!

[UPDATE: This story was originally published on November 19.]
Ever wondered who plots red-carpet domination alongside Hollywood's top stylists? Here's your answer: They're the upper-crust fashion publicists sitting pretty behind big brands like Balenciaga, Chloé, and Bulgari — and they're one tightly knit, exclusive clique! These ladies and gents are privy to the whispers of every Oscar fitting, know who's wearing what to which premiere weeks in advance, and pretty much take top billing in the dream-gig department (someone practically has to pass away before these positions free up!).
Naturally, when you've got so much clout, you have to be dressed to the nines from 9 to 5 (and beyond). And, since we've been admiring this particular set's style up close and personal at press appointments and parties for a while now, we knew it was high time to give you a glance, too. From lavish Dior bags and vivid Vivienne Westwood belts to teal Choo pumps, these looks are so chic, their wearers could be stepping out on red carpets of their own!

Company: BPCM LA
Title: Director
Brands You Represent: "I lead the Current/Elliott and Joie accounts, and I oversee all accounts at BPCM LA."

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"I’ve been with BPCM LA for seven years. Prior to that, I worked at BWR, and a colleague of mine told me about an opening here. I met with Ali Froley (Partner of the L.A. office) and Carrie Ellen Phillips (Partner of BPCM) for coffee. At the time, I wasn’t looking to leave BWR, so I took the interview as a general meeting to get to know the company and what career opportunities it had to offer. The interview went well and it was pretty straightforward. Once I mentioned that I didn’t have a problem pitching, I was pretty much hired on the spot. And the rest is history."

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"I get pure enjoyment out of seeing my clients featured in magazines, weeklies, online, and on celebrities. I love to deliver results for my clients in addition to managing their expectations. I also enjoy cultivating and cementing relationships with editors, stylists, celebs, and key players within the industry. I consider myself a people person, who’s always networking in efforts to benefit my clients and the company. And, of course, the clothes!"

What's the coolest moment you've had while on the clock?
"Going to Istanbul and bringing key L.A. store owners and journalists to the city's fashion week – it was a trip of a lifetime!"

Describe your company's mantra and why you feel you're the perfect fit.
"BPCM LA’s client roster includes such a wide variety of brands, so to have the opportunity to work on a such a diverse group is super exciting. You never know what the day will hold. We handle some of the chicest events in the city from Baby2Baby, Jenni Kayne, NARS, Lanvin, Rebecca Taylor, Burton Snowboards, and those are just to name a few!"

What pieces from your brands are you pining after this very minute?
"I’m obsessing over Current/Elliott’s velvet-flower skinny jeans – the brand is my absolute favorite for jeans! Joie makes the coziest sweaters ever. I need the Rosalie ASAP! Also, I’m in the market for a short bootie for fall and the ALDO PODUJEVE booties are just what I need. Lastly, I get hot very easily, so this Jenni Kayne crewneck thermal is the perfect top to keep me warm, but not too warm for fall."

What's your approach to dressing for the workplace? Is it required that you wear your brands?
"It’s not required for us to wear our brands, but most days I do. My style at the workplace is comfortable, eclectic, and chic."

Company: Vivienne Westwood
Title: PR Coordinator, America

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"Everything from sample requests to stylist and editor pulls and VIP dressing to coordinating with our U.K. press office. I also spend time on the floor with the Vivienne Westood retail team. I liaise daily with the U.K. office and am in constant communication with our L.A. agency, Starworks — we're a very close knit team."

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"It was a super fast process — I was referred for the position, went in for the interview, and was hired on the spot."

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"Wearing Vivienne Westwood's designs daily, working with talented stylists and editors, and getting to spend time with Vivienne Westwood herself while in Paris for fashion week."

What's the coolest moment you've had while on the clock?
"Traveling to Paris for the Gold Label fashion show held at the gorgeous British Embassy. The show was entitled Climate Revolution — Vivienne spoke to me about Climate Change and it was so amazing to hear how passionate she is about it."

Describe your brand's mantra and why you feel you're the perfect fit.
"Vivienne Westwood's mantra is Climate Change. I love a woman who can stand for something so powerful and I only hope that I too can be a voice for her and her cause through my job. You can read all about it on Vivienne's blog."

What piece are you pining after this very minute?
"Wow! There are so many things, I need to make a list for Santa! But, I am dying for a pair of the Rocking Horse Ballerina Kid shoes! They are iconic and are only sold at the Vivienne Westwood L.A. store, which is the only one in the U.S."

What is your approach to dressing for the workplace?
"It's required that I wear Vivienne Westwood every day and it's great because her clothes are so much fun. I have the same things in rotation and mix it up during the week. I wear my pirate boots every single day! Ever since Kate Moss wore them, I have always wanted to own a pair."

"That I enjoy coming to work!"

Zara Jacket, American Apparel Tank, Helmut Lang Pants, Bulgari Bag, Givenchy shoes, Bulgari, Hermes, and Various Evil-Eye Bracelets from Turkey, Forever 21 Necklace, Bulgari and Vintage rings. "The ring on my left hand was my Dad’s earring. It's a funny story because he was a career fighter pilot in the Air Force and the last person who would ever wear an earring. He lost a bet and had to pierce his ear. I now wear it every day ... I love jewelry with a story since it's such a sentimental accessory."

Name: Chase Weideman
Age: 27
Company: BPCM LA
Title: VIP Account Executive
Brands You Represent: LANVIN, Barbara Bui, Rachel Zoe Collection, Hugo Boss, ALDO, Burton Snowboards

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"A standard day involves waking up to a buzzing iPhone, not an alarm clock. So I immediately take 20 minutes and catch up on all of the e-mails from Paris and NYC that I received overnight. Then, I shower, down a cup of coffee, and head to the office where the madness ensues right away. Days at BPCM LA are full of stylist pulls, celebrity fittings, and at least a few conference calls and meetings. Things usually wrap up around 6:30 (but not the e-mails – those are 24-7). If I don’t have drinks or a dinner planned with a publicist or a stylist, I head home to make dinner with my man and get in some family time because that’s what it’s really all about."

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"Collectively, I’ve been working at BPCM for 3-plus years, with a one year break in between. I started at the New York office in 2008 as an intern and, luckily, it just worked! After a couple of years with the company, I took a brief pause from agency life to work in-house at Rebecca Minkoff. My interview process at BPCM was essentially a five-week internship during New York Fashion Week. I really worked my ass off, did my research, showed up on time, and brought my A-game in hopes of proving myself as invaluable. Carrie and Vanessa are incredible women and they ultimately took a chance on a rather poorly dressed — but very ambitious — kid from Nebraska, and offered me a job. Life and love brought me West in 2011, so I contacted Ali Froley, Partner at BPCM LA, and luck was on my side yet again! I was able to rejoin the BPCM family, this time out of the L.A. office, handling VIP Relations for my amazing brands."

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"For me, it’s not about the gift bags or the discounts, mainly because I work with quite a few women’s brands! So, my takeaway every day is taking pride in the hard work that I devote to my clients' brands and seeing them evolve and grow."

What's the coolest moment you've had while on the clock?
"Wishing Jean Dujardin 'Good luck' after getting him dressed for the Oscars was a very cool moment. He won Best Actor that night! And, he looked impeccable."

Describe your company's mantra and why you feel you're the perfect fit.
"I work with such a wide variety of brands from LANVIN to Burton Snowboards, so I’m usually planning a celebrity activation at the Sundance Film Festival, while simultaneously working on securing custom looks for Awards Season. It works perfectly for me because time and my experiences have turned me into a fashion publicist of all trades and, over the years, I've really mastered that whole, 'multi-tasking' thing."

What pieces from your brands are you pining after this very minute?
I am needing the LANVIN Leather and Wool Bomber that I just got Robert Pattinson into at his The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 photo-call in Madrid, and the MONTANO from Mr. B’s – the perfect boot for a winter in L.A. I’ve also been an avid snowboarder for about 18 years and I've got to get a new kit – this Burton Vapor board should do the trick.

What's your approach to dressing for the workplace? Is it required that you wear your brands?
No, it’s definitely not required, but it does tend to happen. You build up a loyalty to your brands, so you want to support them as much as possible. I wear my clients quite a bit, but I'm usually dressed in all earth tones. I avoid being flashy in any way, shape, or form. I like a good, cozy sweater from Theory, a pair of khakis under a Burberry trench, and some LANVIN sneakers. Boom. Done. Call it a day."

Age: 36
Company: Richemont
Title: Senior Director of Entertainment Marketing
Brands You Represent:
"We work with 19 brands, but my main focus is with the fashion and jewelry houses Chloé, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Alfred Dunhill."

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"It really depends on the time of year, but no day at Richemont is the same. One day you might find me running to appointments with stylists for red-carpet appearances, while the next I’m holding model castings for events and meeting with costumers for product placement in film and television. The fast-paced environment is what keeps my job exciting."

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"I've been with Richemont for almost eight years now. I was recommended for the position through an industry friend who heard they were looking, and she set us up."

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"Definitely the travel! Going to Paris for the shows is something that never seems like work to me."

What's the coolest moment you've had while on the clock?
"I will never forget the time Perry Farrell performed at the Chloé L.A. store opening party in 2009. As a huge fan of Jane's Addiction and everything he's done after, it felt like a dream come true. I’m still convinced that I appreciated that night more than anyone else!"

Describe your brand's mantra and why you feel you're the perfect fit.
"I find that my personal style most closely mimics Chloé’s design aesthetic: effortlessly feminine, with little luxuries sprinkled throughout."

What piece from your brands are you pining after this very minute?
"I’ve had my eye on the Chloé Lucy Bag for some time now, and while I haven’t decided on a color yet, it’s a must for me! It’s one of those bags I could rely on during the day when I’m running around with my two-year-old daughter, but I know would look just as chic with a cocktail dress for an evening out."

What's your approach to dressing for the workplace?
"Function and comfort are always key for me, so I like to wear pieces that are relaxed, yet still sophisticated — you never know when I might have to run out for a last-minute meeting with a client. It’s not very often that I wear a head-to-toe designer look, but a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and Chloé bag keep me feeling put together and polished at all times."

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"I run event press out of the HL L.A. office — everything from red-carpet openings on Rodeo to intimate dinners at Chateau."

Describe a typical day from start to end.
"On any given day, I get in to the office around 8:30 a.m. and start off by organizing my inbox. I've already read the emails on my Blackberry, but I have to keep my messages super organized, or I can’t stay on top of everything going on. Folders are a must and the red-flag reminder is my lifesaver! I try to prioritize what has to get done first and go from there. I'm always on a deadline; there's no time to dillydally. Client conference calls, filling red-carpet press pits, inviting editors, pitching and securing coverage are just a few things I do throughout my days!"

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"I've been at HL Group for a year and some change. The events department was looking for a red-carpet darling and they stole me away. I've never been happier!"

What was the interview process like?
"My boss is very transparent, so there was no beating around the bush with the demands of the position. I met with the L.A. Partner, the VP of events, and a few phoners later, I had an offer. The expectations were high, but I just received a promotion so I think I made the cut!"

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"I get to work with some of the best luxury brands in the country and the industry’s top talent on the red carpet. You just can’t beat that!"

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"My day starts with calls with European clients from home. Then, I head to the office — unless I have a breakfast meeting somewhere else — and catch up with the team to go over our to-do list for the day. I can either spend the rest of the day at the office speaking with clients, working on strategies and overseeing the showroom, or be out and about for meetings. If there are no work-related events to attend in the evening, I usually end my day with my beloved yoga class at Yogaworks or a drink at Soho House — depending on my mood, sometimes I do both!"

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"I've been with MHA for over three years. In early '09, I left London, where I was a PR Account Director, to move to Los Angeles with my husband. PR is a very small world!"

What's the biggest perk to your job?

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"My partner Jackie and I started MARKED in 2006. She was working as a sales manager for a designer that was also my PR client. At that time, I was also repping a couple of young designers that were super talented, but didn't have the proper sales and retail support to sustain their businesses. Name: Laurence Goldberg
Age: 38
Company: Balenciaga
Title: West Coast Public Relations

What does your role encompass from day-to-day?
"My daily job is to communicate with stylists, publicists, and our press offices in Paris and New York. The bulk of my job is celebrity dressing. Because of the time difference with France, I only have a few hours to liaise with the Paris press office. So, mornings are usually pretty busy! I'm constantly sending clothes to stylists for their fittings with actors, or I'll do the fittings directly. A lot of my job is maintaining relationships with stylists and celebrity publicists, and being in-the-know about what's happing in Hollywood in regards to actors, premieres, and events and such. I try to schedule a couple of lunches a week to keep up with key people. Another big part of my job is researching the next big star, so I spend a lot of time tracking actors who would be a good fit for Balenciaga — not just physically — but also based upon their choice of movies, and what I can gather of their personalities and spirits. This is the part of my job I enjoy the most: the 'casting' aspect. I love going after actors who are a good fit for the brand."

How long have you had your gig and how did you come by it?
"I've been at Balenciaga full time for just over five years, but I consulted for the brand prior to that, researching a retail space for them in Los Angeles. My relationship with the company and Nicolas Ghesquière dates back to '98, when I worked at PR Consulting in NYC, and Balenciaga was a brand-new client."

What's the biggest perk to your job?
"Besides access to the incredible clothing and accessories, the biggest perk has been traveling to NYC, Milan, and Paris twice a year to help coordinate casting and fittings with models for our shows. This is unrelated to my daily activities, so it's a great honor to be part of a very small team during a very exciting time of the year."

Describe your brand's mantra and why you feel you're the perfect fit.
"Balenciaga is a brand that perfectly mixes classic style and avant-garde design. I can relate to that mix. I'ts also a brand with a very strong direction. We don't just lend out to anyone, our approach to dressing actors is all very thought out. I like that intellectual aspect."

What pieces from your brand are you pining after this very minute?
"The Padlock All Afternoon Bag in yellow, the Pencil Skirt in black leather, and the Gate Mocassin Style Pumps in Bordeaux."

What's your approach to dressing for the workplace?
"I wear at least one item of Balenciaga every day, though it isn't unusual for me to wear it head-to-toe either! One of the most important things for me in dressing for work is to be comfortable, but chic. I also need to recognize myself in the clothes. I never want to look or feel foreign or 'costume-y.' I must be at ease in my outfit. I would never wear something that isn't me, regardless of the brand. I like to mix masculine and feminine, and this style is often reflected in our collections. I wear jeans as much as I wear dresses and skirts, and the same goes for flats and heels. Also, I don't separate day and evening too much — it's all about style for me. I don't adhere too much to codes."
