Christopher Owens (of Girls): (le) Poisson Rouge, November 14, $20
For fans of perennially bummed San Francisco rockers Girls, the reaction to lead singer Christopher Owens announcing a solo career was likely: “But wasn’t he always?” Yet, while Girls was always mostly Owens show, his solo work feels even more stripped down and personal, if you can imagine that. Just try to make it through Wednesday’s concert without tearing up.
Wednesday, November 14, 7 p.m., (le) Poisson Rouge,158 Bleecker Street (between Thompson and Sullivan streets); 212-353-3474.
Sharon Van Etten, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), John Maloney, Aaron Dessner (The National), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), Brad Cook (Megafaun): Town Hall, November 17, $20
The lineup for Thursday’s concert at Town Hall features an impressive collection of indie heavyweights all supporting the incomparable Sharon Van Etten. Few other performers could have Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore supporting them, but Van Etten’s brand of ultra-personal lyrics and affecting melodies are in a class of their own.
Thursday, November 15, 7:30 p.m., Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street (between 6th and 7th avenues); 212-997-1003.
Matthew Dear: Webster Hall, November 17, $20
Ghostly International founder, electronic pop purveyor, and all-around dapper dude Matthew Dear released a pretty great new album with this year’s Beams. If you’re looking for an excuse to dance this weekend, you really couldn’t do better than Dear at Webster Hall. One of the best live shows around.
Saturday, November 17, 7 p.m., Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street (between 3rd and 4th avenues); 212-353-1600.
