This Is Our Jam: Solange, "Losing You"

comments

Solange’s new single — her first piece of solo work in four years — is a remarkably, fantastically good pop song. Produced and co-written by Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange and released via Chris Taylor’s (of Grizzly Bear) Terrible Records label, “Losing You” might look like it’s going for alt cred over mainstream appeal. It isn’t though — not really. In fact, there’s nothing calculated about the track whatsoever.

Its breezy chorus and ridiculously catchy beat sound like Solange has found the groove she’s always been searching for. This seems largely due to her creative chemistry with Hynes, whom, with his ‘80s-leaning dance predilections, becomes the perfect framework for Solange’s airy voice. (Hynes also helped out with last year's excellent Rewards track, "Equal Dreams," which featured Solange.)

The Melina Matsoukas-directed video, too, is a career highlight. With its gorgeous South African setting, it looks like it was a ball to film. And that’s the thing: While “Losing You” may be a breakup song, the sounds we hear are pure bliss.
