UPDATE: Somewhere out there, regular-mall shoppers are getting ready to be mighty confused about the oversized jackets, gloves-as-straps bags, and enormously large and deconstructed sweaters. Yes, Martin Margiela isn't exactly for the average American...but that's why this line is so particularly wonderful.
The first lookbook from the secretive collaboration between H&M and Martin Margiela has been released today, and boy, oh boy. From the mega-menswear to gorgeous oxblood wedges, the whole thing perfectly encapsulates the forward-thinking genius of Margiela. Somehow, the collaboration with the large retailer hasn't diminished the vision at all — and in fact, has re-envisioned it to be wonderfully weird and wearable. So, click through and check it out, and enjoy imagining mall-going U.S.A. trying on these billowing dresses (is that a necklace, or a stethoscope?) and asymmetric pants. It's a beautiful thought. The oversized blazer, big ol' shoulder pads, and strange sex appeal are all par for the (Margiela) course, and we're beyond interested to see how the avant-garde design house manages to commercialize its clothing for H&M. The first images of models Sarah Murray and Marie Sophie Wilson have been released, and they are just as stark, Belgian, and Margiela as we could hope for. With dramatic, black-and-white images and very MMM-esque avant-garde shapes, it is clear that, despite collaborating with the Swedish super retailer, the enigmatic brand is certainly keeping its eclectic DNA with this project.
The Sam Taylor Wood-shot ad campaign will run this month in Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, GQ, and Dazed & Confused, and the TV ad will run starting November 8 — as for us, we'll be racing to fire up our laptops when the collection drops in 230 H&M stores and online on November 15.
