Jonathan Saunders is clearly putting his £200,000 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund prize money to good use. Picking up a slew of trophies appears to have whetted the Scottish designer’s appetite for other shiny-'n'-new things, like a spring '13 collection that was rife with metallics and sparkling sequins.Showing at the Tate Modern’s mirrored gallery space, Saunders ushered in a phalanx of models in slinky silhouettes, glossy candy stripes, and slick Mylar-effect skirts that revealed basic, black fabric from behind. Saunders has cited the disco era as inspiration for this season, and it’s not hard to imagine Liza spilling out of Studio 54 in one of his emerald or ruby-sequined dresses, which, in true Saunders form, featured gray and black colorblocking at the hem. Elsewhere, there were honeycomb prints, ‘70s-style ombré ensembles, and bold, graphic, diagonal stripes and arches. Those may have more sway with the ready-to-wear customer, but it’s the silver stripes and liquidy skirts that will stay with us. Bonus: We’ll never need a flashlight again.
