There's no question that Creatures of the Wind, a modest duo based in Chicago, have been the designers on everyone's lips these past few seasons. Combining a studied, art-school vibe with Rodarte-esque textural flourishes and clever surprises, its unique sensibility has been a refreshing arrival amid so many trend-obsessed designer drones.
And yesterday's first runway show more than proved this is a collection — and point of view — that's picking up speed...fast. There were more than a few gasps, as models in anti-glam hairnets strolled in looks that could possibly be described as schoolgirl couture. Sixties structure and some masculine lines offered a stunning contrast to bold, jeweled embellishments, unusual layering, and unexpected color combos. In short, these were clothes that were daring and unconventional, but still well within the realm of wearability, which, for most women, never hurts.
