3 Shows To Catch This Week: Deerhunter, Sun Araw, Janelle Monae

Deerhunter, Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces), August 22 and 23, Webster Hall, $24.70
Show after show, album after album, year after year, Deerhunter continue to solidify their place as an indie band for the ages. This two-night stint at Webster Hall is another great chance to watch Bradford Cox and co. do their thing. Opening is The Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger, whose new solo record, Last Summer, is the most straightforward and enjoyable thing to come from a Friedberger in quite some time.
Monday, August 22 and Tuesday, August 23, at 8 p.m Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street  New York, NY 10009; 212-353-1600

Things get trippy this Friday at the Music Hall, with co-headlining psychedelic synth gurus in Sun Araw and Prince Rama. The bill also features the incomparable Julianna Barwick, noise-pop locals, Pterodactyl, and the seemingly ubiquitous (but always awesome) Teengirl Fantasy.

Afro-Punk Festival 2011: Santigold, Cee Lo Green, Toro y Moi, Das Racist, Reggie Watts, Janelle Monae, Cerebral Ballzy, and more, August 27 and 28, Commodore Berry Park, FREE
Curated by Matthew Morgan and James Spooner, the Afro-Punk festival highlights multi-cultural alternative culture ranging from hip-hop and soul, to punk rock. Along with all the musical acts, Afro-Punk features some of New York City’s best food trucks, a BMX and Skate Boarding competition, and documentary film screenings, but it’s the music alone that makes this year’s festival a can’t-miss.

Saturday, August 27 at 1p.m. Commodore Berry Park, Flushing Avenue (between Navy St. and N. Elliott) Brooklyn, NY 11205.
