After a year of unicorn beauty, we could all probably use something a little... darker. Forget rainbow highlighters, eyeshadow that looks like fairy dust, and iridescent lip gloss that, TBH, just isn't that flattering. The way the world is turning these days, we want makeup that reflects our general state of mind — which, especially this season, is moody, dark, and gothic as hell.
While this particular look has typically been reserved for beauty buffs of a particular taste or costume parties, those days are long gone. In fact, more people are making power statements with black lipstick. But, if you're after a more wearable way to wear the trend, we've found the solution for you.
This month, the brand is collaborating with the singer-songwriter to bring gothic-inspired beauty mainstream. First, it is important to know there's a little hocus pocus behind the new product: The brand tells Refinery29 the Exuviae Ash and Ember Eye Soot's rusty shade was pulled from the shell of a cicada insect; the Swarm Enchanted Lip Sheer is meant to reflect the clay of the earth, a sky at sunset, and an overwhelming sense of biological signals (basically, more insect references).
Better still, the pigments are flattering on all skin tones, and the red-brown hue stirs up enough nostalgia to convince us it's exactly what Courtney Love would have worn in the 90s.
The only downside: The prices are little steep at $24 and $38, respectively. But considering the makeup will work year-round and put you ahead of the trend forecast, we suggest giving the magical formulas a try before October hits. Our advice: Turn on The Craft, then some Chelsea Wolfe, and blot on this lipstick until it looks like it's stained with blood.
Chelsea Wolfe x Rituel de Fille Swarm Enchanted Lip Sheer, $24, and Exuviae Ash and Ember Eye Soot, $38, both available at Rituel de Fille.
