Anna Sui's signature carved roses, butterfly embellishments, and psychedelic prints are coming to a home store near you soon. The New York City-based fashion designer is partnering with PBteen — Pottery Barn's youth-focused sister brand — to deliver an exclusive home décor collection launching this September.
If you're familiar with Sui's work, you know her foray into interior furnishings makes total sense. The fashion designer is renowned for her bohemian-chic aesthetic and whimsical patterns — both qualities that will translate well into the lifestyle category. Plus, she already has a cosmetics and fragrance line under her belt: Sui's signature Victorian-inspired, purple-and-black product packaging has been a huge hit in the Asian market and beyond.
"Since day one, when I opened my original flagship store on Greene Street, people have always asked me where they can buy the furniture in my boutique," Sui told Refinery29 in an exclusive interview. "My customers want the environment and feeling of the world of Anna Sui, so we're now trying to interpret that for PBteen."
The line will include curtains, bedding, artwork, lighting, and home accessories, many inspired by the womenswear mogul's runway collections in Spring and Fall 2014. Although some of the items take cues from Sui's chinoiserie looks, others are recreations of bedroom pieces Sui had as a teenager.
"When I was in the 10th grade, I decided that I would no longer have a little girl's bedroom," Sui recalled. "I went to the Salvation Army in downtown Detroit and dragged this Victorian-looking vanity home — I painted it all black to add my own touch. My mom was horrified!" This sentimental piece of furniture — which still sits in the brand's showroom to this day — is one of the designs duplicated in this collaboration. Expect many other products to feature the same approach of merging vintage styles with Sui's playful flair.
