4 Things You're Getting Wrong About Aries

Welcome to Aries season, the time of year when we all feel a little bolder, a little braver, and a lot more stubborn. As the first sign in the Zodiac, Aries kicks off the astrological new year and sets the tone for spring. That's why Aries people can have an invigorating effect on those around them — they're preparing people for the warmer, livelier months to come.
Of course, not everyone associates Aries with their good traits. Rams get a bad rap for being pushy and having an aggressive approach to life. Just looking at their ruling planet (Mars) and element (fire) paints a pretty combative picture, right? But that's hardly the full story. As any Aries will tell you, they're more than just a pair of horns.

Yes, Aries are truly a force of nature, but that doesn't necessarily mean we should stay out of their way. Ahead, we bust four major misconceptions about people born under the Aries sign — and remind you what actually makes them fantastic companions.

They're too impulsive to keep up with.

This energetic sign comes first in the Zodiac for a reason. They're total trendsetters who love to lead — this, of course, does not make them great at tackling to-do lists. Rams make individuality a priority over practicality, but that doesn't mean they want to be alone on the cutting edge. Sometimes described as the younger sibling of the Zodiac, Aries love to be where the people are. As restless as they seem, they'll never leave their ride-or-dies in the dust.

They're only motivated by competition.

Remember what we said about Rams being trendsetters? Those trailblazing instincts can make them seem like competition junkies, too. Aries certainly find games, sports, and, yes, winning enjoyable, but not for the reason you'd expect. When your Aries friend gets a little too into Settlers of Catan, it's because they see it as a challenge to themselves — not because they want to beat everyone else. Aries hate being told something is off-limits to them, and that can-do attitude can get out of control, especially when they believe that victory is in their reach. That said, we give you full permission to remind them that it's just a game.

They always put themselves first.

Sure, at first glance, Rams may seem self-centered, but to think that they're selfish would be short-sighted. The same instinct that pushes Aries people to speak up for themselves also makes them major advocates for their friends' needs. This willful fire sign has an ingrained love for debates and heated discussions — once they find a cause they care about, they will put it ahead of their own needs. Aries may not direct their passion as precisely as other signs, but they make up for that in the impact their powers of persuasion leave behind.

They're downright reckless.

Even if they don't mean to, fire signs can leave quite a bit of damage in their wake — and the hard-headed Ram is no exception. Whether they're gunning for a victory or stubbornly defending a point, Aries can easily lose sight of the long-term consequences of their actions. What they see is what's right in front of them, which they intend to face with total heroism. That's what makes an Aries in your corner so valuable: Their bravery is unmatched. And when channeled toward, say, a cause (as we mentioned before), that courage can actually be very productive, with only minimal resulting chaos.
