Over the years, Dove's positive brand ethos has encouraged women around the world to embrace their curls, choose to label themselves beautiful, and stop chasing likes on social media. The company's latest movement might just be our favorite — and most powerful — to date.
For its #MyBeautyMySay campaign, Dove brought together several women who are rising above societal expectations and embracing their own unique beauty. The gang includes: Heather Hardy, a boxing champion deemed "too pretty to fight"; Jessica Torres, a fashion blogger who's challenging the fashion industry's standards; and Rain Dove, a genderqueer model, among other boundary-pushers. Every member of the diverse group has one thing in common: She's unapologetically herself.
"Somewhere along the way, it has become the norm to judge women based on their appearance. Dove created #MyBeautyMySay because we believe a woman’s beauty should not be used to belittle her achievements — instead, her beauty should be celebrated on her terms," Jennifer Bremner, Dove's marketing director, said in a statement. "We want women to challenge this behavior that has unfortunately become commonplace in our society. We are giving all women a platform to speak out and join us to change the conversation."
Dove is also inviting women to share their own motivational stories via the hashtag. According to the company's internal findings, eight out of 10 females believe every woman has something about her that is beautiful, yet many continue to feel limited by society’s judgments of their looks. We hope this video, along with the influencers' stories, helps shift that mentality for good.
