Tracy Morgan made a surprise appearance on the Emmys, presenting the award for Outstanding Drama Series. Morgan has been out of the public eye for more than a year, recovering from a life-threatening accident involving a Walmart truck that killed another man in the vehicle. Morgan was visibly choked up as he told the room, who gave him a standing ovation, how much he missed everyone. "Last year, Jimmy Kimmel sat on this stage and said we will see you back here next year, Tracy Morgan," he said. "Well, Jimmy, thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my family, my beautiful new wife, I'm here." Seeing Morgan deliver his speech with complete serious sincerity was remarkable and we could barely hold it together. He then slipped back into the Morgan we know in the next breath, saying, "I've suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me in a coma for eight days. When I finally regained consciousness, I was just ecstatic to learn I wasn't the one who messed up," he said and paused for the room to applaud and laugh. "Only recently I've started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of y'all women gonna get pregnant at the after-party. It's going down." At that point the cameras cut to Tina Fey, clapping and looking elated (and maybe shedding a few tears) while Morgan cracked the pregnancy joke that 30 Rock fans have heard so many times before. We assume that's when all of America did a cry-laugh along with her.
