College Students Hang Sexually Explicit Banners & Outrage Campus

Female students at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA were the recipients of an unwanted, hypersexual welcome back to school this weekend. Students hung banners off the second floor balcony of a private residence near the university that read, "Freshman Daughter Drop Off," "Rowdy and Fun, Hope Your Baby Girl Is Ready For a Good Time..." and "Go Ahead and Drop Mom Off Too..."

Local TV station WAVY-10 obtained a statement from Ellen Nuefeldt, Vice President of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services at the school, that said they had begun working to have the signs taken down as soon as they were made aware of them. "At ODU, we foster a community of respect and dignity and these messages sickened us," Neufeldt's statement read. "They are not representative of our 3,000 faculty and staff, 25,000 students, and our 130,000 alumni. Ours is a community that works actively to promote bystander intervention and takes a stand denouncing violence against women."

John R. Broderick, President of ODU, sent WAVY-10 a copy of an email he sent to all students and faculty addressing offended students, alumni and the campus community. In no uncertain terms it reminds everyone of the school's zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment. "I said at my State of the University address that there is zero tolerance on this campus for sexual assault and sexual harassment," Broderick writes. "This incident will be reviewed immediately by those on campus empowered to do so. Any student found to have violated the code of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action."
The school also posted a video featuring campus leaders who speak with a unified voice in support of the zero-tolerance policy. Watch it below.
