Could Your Last Name Actually Mean Bacon?

Everything is better with bacon — even your last name. Well, the origin of your last name anyway.

Bacon fever reached its height a few years back, but it turns out people have been crazy for the stuff for centuries. A recent study, conducted by genealogy site Moose Roots, took surname meaning and origin data, combined it with 2000 U.S. Census info, and found 31 last names that offer a nod to everyone's favorite breakfast side.

Now, some are pretty obvious — we're looking at you Lard — while for others, you'd need to speak German or Dutch (or any other language of origin). All of the names have some sort of historial tie and could possibly indicate what your ancestors did for work. For example, the name Griebe in Middle High German means "rendered bacon pieces" or "cracking" and was an occupational name for a butcher or fat dealer.

See if your surname means bacon (or a related pork product).
