Amy Schumer Promises To Speak Out About Gun Violence

Amy Schumer is not going to let the deaths of two women shot in a theater showing Trainwreck in Lafayette, Louisiana, fade away from our memory without her incisive commentary. After the July 23 shooting, in which a man shot 11 people, killing two and himself, an anti-gun activist wrote an open letter to Schumer.

"[A]s a woman, a daughter and sister, a national figure, and a role model, you have a real stake in gun violence happening all around you," Sarah Clements wrote on Medium.com. "I know the guilt, the sadness, the hole in your heart you’re feeling. I know the crushing anxiety you have for Jillian Johnson and Mayci Breaux (since corrected from Marci) and their families.

"Join our movement," Clements continued, explaining that her own activism began after her mother survived the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. "Write an op-ed. Support an organization. Demand change. Be a voice for our generation and for women — two groups who make up most of the victims of the gun violence in our country."

Schumer, who had tweeted "my heart is broken" about the shootings immediately after they occurred, responded to Clements' call on Twitter as well. "Don't worry I'm on it. You'll see."

Will this be response in the form of a sketch? She's already done one on Inside Amy Schumer, mocking the ease at which people can obtain guns versus birth control in this country. Or will she be aiming for something bigger? We can't wait to see.

SPOT. ON.
