John Green, author of Paper Towns, is defending the film's star, Cara Delevingne, after a controversial interview which recently went viral. Most notably, Delevingne's interviewer, an anchor on the morning show Good Day Sacramento, asked if the actress / model read Paper Towns. In an essay published on Medium titled But Did You Read the Book? Green pointed out the inherent sexism of the question, explaining "Cara has read the book (multiple times), but the question is annoying — not least because her male costar, Nat Wolff, was almost always asked when he’d read the book, while Cara was almost always asked if she’d read it."
Green, who's run the popular YouTube channel Vlogbrothers, with his brother Hank Green since 2007, also created a video about his experience on the Paper Towns press tour. Here, he specifically delved into what he described as the "commodification of the self" it promotes.
He cited Delevingne's resistance of that phenomena as a reason she could have come off as rude or flippant, explaining, "Cara, however, refuses to stick to the script. She refuses to indulge lazy questions and refuses to turn herself into an automaton to get through long days of junketry. I don’t find that behavior entitled or haughty. I find it admirable."
