Girl power movies are nothing new, from classics like Nine to Five and The First Wives Club, to newer releases like, The Other Woman and Obvious Child. We're not at a loss to find films that feature powerful, spunky women who get by on their own strength, wit, and independence. But we're sorely lacking in movies that are actually about what it means to be a woman struggling to be seen as a whole person. Suffragette tells the story of the women who risked everything for the right to vote in 20th-century Britain. Starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, and Meryl Streep (among others), this powerful drama is inspired by the true events. Streep plays the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst, who recruits Mulligan, a working wife and mother, to the cause — at the risk of losing everything. This is much more than a film about girl power. It's about what it took for women to have any kind of power at all. Get a first look at the full trailer below. Suffragette will be in theaters everywhere, this fall.
