Update: The shooting that prompted the lockdown of the Capitol was a suicide, CNN reports. The lockdown has been lifted. Capitol police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider told CNN the lockdown was lifted at 3:50pm EST, but the west front, where the shots were fired, remains closed.

The U.S. Capitol is on lockdown after shots were fired this afternoon.

According to Time, the suspected shooter was "neutralized," after police began investigating a suspicious package.

No lawmakers were in attendance as Congress is on a two-week recess.
