PSA: Please Don’t Pour Soda In Your Hair

The straight-, fine-, and wavy-haired women of the world just can't seem to get enough of tousled, beachy strands. We'll drop loads of dough on salt sprays and texture mousses to get our manes looking like we just finished a surfing session. But, Suki Waterhouse has a different trick for her thinner hair: a DIY one. According to an interview with Us Weekly, she rinses her hair with Coca-Cola to get her desired texture. "I don't like my hair when it's washed — it's fine and limp — but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something," she told the magazine.  Now, we've heard of some pretty out-of-the-box at-home beauty routines (we're looking at you, Shailene Woodley). But, Suki's soda rinse just rubbed us the wrong way — cracking a can of Coke over your head can't be all that good for your hair. So, we chatted with hairstylist Adam Maclay, and he confirmed our suspicions. "It's definitely the sugar content that is going to muck up your hair," he says.  Sure, sugar is sticky — and sticky means texture. But, before you run out and pour soda on your skull, Maclay says to consider this: "Coca-Cola can take the rust off of chrome," he says. "I definitely don't think you should be using that on your head," since your hair follicle is so delicate and prone to damage. Sorry, Suki: We're all for texture, but we think we'll stick with what we know for a fact will make our hair look better — like our salt spray.
