Makeup Is Having An Artsy Moment

“I think we’re starting to really have fun with makeup again,” Gucci Westman quipped backstage at Marchesa, where she was busy creating a glamorous, gilded-eye, scarlet-lipped face. “For so many seasons, we’ve been doing 'barely-there,' but this time, it just feels different.”
It feels so different that we’re tempted to call it the comeback of cosmetics. Instead of all that dewy skin of past seasons, we got dewy eyelashes (Carolina Herrera). Instead of the illusion of eyeliner (last season at Jason Wu, true story), we got graphic cat-eyes and creases (Rochas, Vaccarello, Cushnie et Ochs).
But, all the graphic illustrations we’re seeing on the runways take the cake for creativity. Makeup pros like Val Garland, Diane Kendal, and Dick Page are really going for it, referencing inspirations such as abstract expressionism and Jean Cocteau.
Ahead, see the looks in all of their artistic glory.
