The ‘70s may be dominating right now as the decade providing designers with the most inspiration, but that doesn’t mean the ‘80s are being neglected by just everyone. For every designer who opted for cornflower-blue bell-bottoms instead of stonewashed mom jeans and brown-suede ponchos instead of jewel-toned flight jackets, J.W. Anderson’s collection more than compensated. No joke — it was pure, unfiltered '80s. So much so, in fact, that if Clair Huxtable didn't already wear most of these looks, they’re so her that we she might as well have.
The collection lineup reads like an inventory check of an ‘80s costume party: mock-neck tunic dresses; ruched, pointed-toe knee-boots; geometric accessories; wide-wale corduroy and chenille; massive leather overcoats in super-saturated hues; sequined boleros; graphic-knit matching separates; and, of course, Koos van den Akker-inspired sweaters (we're not calling them Cosby sweaters anymore, because...no). Modern touches made these pieces feel a bit more 2015, but judging from the crowd’s reaction both IRL and via social media, the lack of shoulder pads didn’t muffle this show’s ‘80s scream.
