The 2015 awards season officially kicked off last night with a non-feminist pixie cut and some sass.
Within 15 minutes, America's Favorite Comedic TV Actress Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting addressed her recent anti-feminist quotes before presenting the always enjoyable Melissa McCarthy with the People's Choice Award for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress. What was likely meant to be an mea culpa for her "misquotes" came off as a flippant extenuation of a disingenuous "apology tour." Her armrest came apart later in the show. Karma? Karma.
The rest of the 120 minutes or so were riddled with delightfully awkward speeches, shameless project plugging, and Chris Evans' (successful) attempt at melting hearts. America chose some interesting favorites (Adam Sandler as favorite comedic movie actor? Iggy Azalea as favorite hip-hop artist over Nicki Minaj or Drake? Zero awards for Beyoncé? Really?) and continued to breathe life into Grey's Anatomy.
The two highlights of the evening came in the form of acceptance speeches: Ben Affleck's teary-eyed acceptance of his humanitarian award and Viola Davis addressing The New York Times. Davis won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Actress In A New TV Series. She thanked Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk and showed the Times just how beautiful a "less classically beautiful" woman can be.
Hey, at least these two know how to get away with saving an awards show.
