Sometimes it’s difficult to find enough motivation to work out. Mainly because the idea of running in place for 30 minutes while staring at a wall sounds incredibly boring. Alas, the fresh air and scenic routes aren’t always possible when it’s freezing cold and snowing outside. That's no reason to lose fitness hope just yet, because Shape has rounded up a few reasons why the treadmill is sometimes a runner’s saving grace.
For starters, most of us take our outdoor running to the streets and not through meadows bursting with flowers and empty trails. That means traffic-related air pollution finds its way into our lungs. The treadmill provides a nice break from the heavy smog, which can cause heart problems, according to a study by the University of California, Irvine. Further, the potholes, rocks, and cracks on the road (and giant roots on trails) are harder on your joints than the smooth, cushioned treadmill track.
Still not convinced? Setting up the incline to mimic outdoor hills and trails will have you working out just as hard. Plus, being able to set the pace as fast as you can go without having to worry about tripping or tracking your distance is something only a treadmill can really offer.
