The tale of love gone wrong is widely believed to be about Gomez's on-off boyfriend, Justin Bieber. That may explain why the pop star delivered such a raw, emotional performance, looking visibly bereft. Tissues, now!
Of course, the cynics among us may wonder if the heart-wrenching moment was all orchestrated. Taylor Swift busted out her acting chops during her "Blank Space" number, so maybe Gomez decided to, as well?

Speaking of Tay, she and Gomez appeared to be on the best of terms. The two former BFFs were together in the front row, with new Swift sidekick Lorde placed on the other side of Gomez. Let's hope they didn't do that lean-over-the-person-in-the-middle-to-talk thing. So awkward, that.
