Nichols was the Oscar-winning director of The Graduate. He also received Oscar nominations for directing Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Working Girl, The Remains of the Day, and Silkwood. His last movie was 2007's Charlie Wilson's War, starring Tom Hanks.
Before reaching directorial fame, Nichols got his start as part of comedy duo Nichols and May. He and Elaine May were a Grammy-award winning improv pair.
Nichols was married to ABC News anchor and journalism icon Diane Sawyer. The two married in 1988.
"He was a true visionary, winning the highest honors in the arts for his work as a director, writer, producer, and comic and was one of a tiny few to win the EGOT — an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony in his lifetime," Goldston wrote in a statement.
