We've got some bad news for chicken-nugget lovers. Packing company Murry's Inc. has recalled some 32,000 pounds of its gluten-free breaded chicken because of the risk of contamination by Staphylococcus aureus. This pesky bacterium can produce seven toxins that cause gastrointestinal illness, a.k.a. food poisoning.
As The Huffington Post reports, the bacterium was detected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture during recent inspection and sampling. The products recalled are 12-ounce boxes of "Bell & Evans Gluten-Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets" and 10.5-ounce boxes of "Bell & Evans Gluten-Free Breaded Chicken Breast" with the sell-by date August 9, 2015.
Meanwhile, Aspen Foods Division of Koch Meats is recalling about 30,000 pounds of its chicken products after six salmonella cases — including one hospitalization — were identified in connection with these products. (The Minnesota Department of Agriculture confirmed salmonella presence.) Salmonella is a bacterial infection, the symptoms of which include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. The recalled Koch Meats products are being sold under the Antioch Farms brand and have sell-by dates of October 1, 2015 and October 7, 2015. Watch out for these products in stores (and double-check your freezer) to avoid some very unnecessary stomach aches.
