The Girls star is adapting Karen Cushman's 1994 YA novel, Catherine, Called Birdy, into a film. Dunham made the announcement during the New Yorker Festival on Friday, where she was promoting her book, Not That Kind of Girl.
Dunham, who will be producing the film through her A Casual Romance production company, revealed that she's a longtime fan of the Newbery Honor-winning book. The coming-of-age story is set in 13th-century England and focuses on a 13-year-old girl who is pursued by various suitors. So, kinda like Hannah Horvath, give or take several centuries and a decade's age difference.
Dunham told the festival audience that it might be tricky to fund a medieval-themed PG-13 story. Which gives us an idea: Why not add some anachronisms to the mix, à la Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette? After all, who could possibly pass up the chance to bankroll a film featuring monks wearing shortalls and texting each other panda emojis? (The Hollywood Reporter)
