From Girls To Broadway: What Can’t Andrew Rannells Do?

You may know him as Elijah, Lena Dunham's gay ex-boyfriend on Girls (yes, the one who slept with Marni that time — #drama). Maybe you're familiar with him as Bryan from NBC sitcom The New Normal. Or, if you're a Broadway buff, you'll instantly recognize him for his Tony-nominated role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon.
Basically, what we're saying is, Andrew Rannells wears tons of hats.
In mid-August, the 36-year-old Nebraska native, who had just wrapped work on Season 4 of Girls and the upcoming film The Intern, returned to his theater roots to shake his thing on stage as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, replacing Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. To prepare, he watched lots of Tina Turner and Iggy Pop performance footage, and found a rather surprising inspiration for his take on Hedwig: Faye Dunaway in Network and Chinatown.
So, how does it feel to step into the very high heels of a Tony-winning actor in a Tony-winning musical revival that has been breaking box office records — let alone thrash around on stage in them? Ahead, Rannells reveals all of that, and more!
