Contrary to popular belief, not every celebrity is camped out in Venice to see George Clooney do something he swore he'd never do. Last night Beyoncé and Jay Z performed together in support of the festival's mission to combat poverty worldwide. Hugh Jackman hosted the event, which saw No Doubt jamming out with Sting, President Obama appearing in a pre-recorded video message, and thrilling performances from Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, The Roots, Tiesto, and .fun.

Among the highlights were The Roots' cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" (always a crowd-pleaser), and the presence of Israeli and Palestinian musicians joining Keys in a rendition of her new peace anthem, "We Are Here." The latter would make any cynic crumble.
