Amy Sedaris' New Netflix Show Is Just Weird Enough For Her

No character may ever match Jerri Blank in weirdness, but Amy Sedaris' new role in Netflix's BoJack Horseman comes pretty close. Or, maybe it's the show's premise itself: A washed-up '90s actor (played by Will Arnett), who also happens to be a horse, believes he's still entitled to all the glory of his heyday. Sedaris plays a cat named Princess Carolyn who is both BoJack Horseman's agent and on-again-off-again girlfriend, which is pretty much exactly how we'd cast our cats in the show of our lives.

The whole thing is weird and wonderful and only made better by the fact the cast is rounded out by Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Kristen Schaal, and Stanley Tucci. The Daily Beast talked to Sedaris about the new show, her old friend Stephen Colbert, and Strangers With Candy. And, of course, rabbits are mentioned because no interview has ever been conducted with the actress where they weren't. See the highlights below.

On turning down acting roles
"I’ve had to be like, 'Oh, I can’t do that. I have a rabbit conference in St. Louis.' You know? They probably just don’t think it’s important, or whatever. Or I’m like, “I have to make 250 potholders in two weeks. I can’t do that.” Or, 'My rabbit is 12 years old. There’s no way I can go to L.A. right now.' So I’ve turned down work for little things like that. They probably just think I’m insane. Because most people will do anything to have a career, and all that. But if someone asked me how would I describe myself, actress would be at the bottom of the list."

On why she cherry-picked this part
"Will Arnett and I have talked for years about trying to do something together, because I love just about everything about Will. Then I just got a phone call. When they told me that Will Arnett would be the star of it, I was like, 'Oh, absolutely.'...[A] lot of times you get scripts for animated shows and then you see the illustrations and you’re like, 'Oh really? That’s what I look like? I don’t really want to play. I don’t know the voice for that.' But when I saw the drawing for this I immediately thought, 'Oh yeah, great.'”

On what kind of Late Show host Stephen Colbert will be
"Well, he’s got that Southern charm. He’s genuinely interested. He’s engaging. He’s a very positive person. He can see the good in everything. I think he’ll go to that other character that he plays on that show because that’s part of him, too....[H]e has this whole bag of tricks people haven’t even seen yet. This guy can do anything, and his reference level is so high."

On the Strangers With Candy audience
"We didn’t even know we had an audience until we [she, Stephen Colbert, and Paul Dinello] went on a book tour for [our book] Wigfield and then all these ugly people came out of the woodwork and we were like, “Who are all these ugly people?” They were like, “Those are all the Strangers fans!...Now I get people that say, 'Oh, my mom watched that show!'"
