If Amazon has any hope of taking a bite out of Netflix's stronghold on original programming, they're going to have to make a major splash this fall. Based on the stunning first trailer for their new series Transparent, it looks like they're off to a rollicking start.
From indie auteur Jill Soloway (Afternoon Delight), the 10-episode series follows a Los Angeles family dealing with the aftermath of its patriarch coming out as transgender. The trans parent (get it?) in question is played by Arrested Development's Jeffrey Tambor, in what will likely be one of the most talked about roles this coming season.
AlthoughOrange Is the New Black has touched upon gender identity issues thanks to the emergence of Laverne Cox, Transparent is poised to explore the subject in a way that no show has before.
Gaby Hoffman, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker, play the siblings who are forced to come to terms with their father's life-changing revelation, while Rob Huebel, Carrie Brownstein, and Judith Light round out a stellar cast.
Critics were sent into orbit after Amazon made the pilot available for streaming in February, and it looks like Soloway has delivered on its promise. You can start binge-watching Transparent when it premieres on Amazon Prime on September 26.
