The de Blasios officially moved to the Upper East Side this week — but they made sure to take a bit of their home borough with them. New York's First Family returned from vacation to their new home, Gracie Mansion. The historic 1799 mayor's residence got a makeover with some help from West Elm, trading some of the historic furniture for a more stylish and functional look.
“Gracie Mansion will always be the People’s House, but Bill, Chiara, Dante, and I are excited to call it home," First Lady Chirlane McCray said. "With assistance from West Elm, we are honoring and preserving one of the nation’s great historic residences, while turning Gracie into a modern living space that fits our family. We’ve moved to a new borough, but we brought some Brooklyn flavor with us.”
The mansion's formal living and dining rooms were transformed into more relaxed common areas, and some of the home's oldest furniture (including wooden cupboards and oriental rugs) was replaced with $65,000 worth of stylish accent chairs, pendant-style light fixtures, and lacquer coffee tables. The color scheme was updated with neutral hues and vibrant pops of accent colors. It may not be the family's hip Park Slope home, but with a little redecorating, the governor's mansion certainly feels more contemporary and comfortable.
