The Non Flower-Child Guide To Wearing Free People

Joan Smalls does not seem like the obvious Free People girl. We've followed her style for quite some time, and let's just say that few pull off unabashedly sexy outfits with a dramatic and glamorous edge quite like the Puerto Rico-born model. But, the laid-back label has a specific style all its own — one that often comes with loose silhouettes and flowers aplenty. And, one we don't typical see from Smalls. That was, of course, until Free People invited her along to front its August magalog.
The transformation of Joan into one of Free People's infamous spokesmodels didn't just occur by simply slipping her into a bohemian frock (though that helped). But, rather, the recently released images are more like a Smalls-approved guide on how to dip your toes into the Free People look, without losing your natural edge.
Swapping your body-con dresses for an empire-waisted baby doll number? Be sure to pair it with flat boots and high socks — no dainty shoes for you. Fringe poncho first timer? Swing that baby over your favorite all black (and, of course, sheer) ensemble. And, yes, even those cozy, slouchy Free People sweaters and printed maxi dresses can be toughed up, too. Smalls does it with plenty pops of leather.
Think of it as the Joan Small's guide to Free People. And, the next 14 slides ahead are the ultimate primer. (Just be sure to keep clicking after that — we're included a first peek at tons more of the newly debuted looks ahead, as well.)
