Image Courtesy of Marvel Comics. With Katniss hibernating until the fall, there's been a major lack of ass-kicking female heroines at the multiplexes this summer. Hopefully that trend won't last, as Marvel took to The View today to announce that Thor will now be the Asgardian goddess of thunder.
While there are no plans to replace Chris Hemsworth as the onscreen version of the Norse hero just yet, the news might pave the way for a big-screen female Thor at some point in the future.
For now, fans looking for more diversity from the world's biggest superhero house will have to make do with a new series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Russell Dauterman.

If you're unfamiliar with Thor's background, here's the math: His godly powers are derived from a magic hammer called Mjolnir, which can only be used by those deemed worthy.
In a recent issue of Jonathan Hickman's Avengers series, it was teased that Thor was on the verge of a major screwup that will deem him decidedly unworthy, and that a woman will pick up the hammer in his place. But, keep in mind, this not a female counterpart to Thor in the same vein as Batgirl is to Batman — this new Thor will be the only Thor. Says Aaron, "This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before."
That's all we know for now, but that will likely change with Comic-Con just around the corner.
In the meantime, if there's a Hemsworth sister somewhere out there, she might want to start growing out her hair. (The Wall Street Journal)
