Newport 2014 ain't your granddaddy's folk festival. That's not to say this three-day soiree isn't about roots and tradition. Among the headliners is 75-year-old soul and gospel great Mavis Staples, and throughout the weekend, artists and critics will honor the late Pete Seeger through a series of "For Pete's Sake" workshops and performances. Clearly, organizers of this beloved Rhode Island fest have a strong sense of history. But, this year's go-round also features countless young bucks, outliers, and genre outlaws. Come for Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst, Jack White, and Jenny Lewis; stay for the Hurray for the Riff Raff, Phox, Lucero, The Devil Makes Three, Benjamin Booker, and all of the great, smaller-print artists fixin’ to make some noise.
Below, you’ll find 35 of our favorite songs from Newport 2014 artists. Listen loud and start getting psyched. And, when you venture up to Fort Adams State Park, bring your grandpa. He's more than welcome.
