The Princess Bride almost fell into that trap, too — and at the acoustic hand of none other than John Mayer. Director Rob Reiner recently told Collider that he's thought about adapting the film in the past, and tapped several potential collaborators.
"I’ve talked to Mark Shaiman about it," Reiner said. "He said, ‘I wouldn’t know what to do. I mean, it’s too good a movie. I can’t imagine.’ I talked to Randy Newman who also [couldn’t do it]. [There] was a moment where John Mayer who I thought had a sense of humor and could do some interesting lyrics and then he said he was gonna do it, then he backed out because he said, ‘It’s too much. I can’t do it.’”
Well, a hearty thank you to whatever powers govern such things, because a Mayer-penned Princess Bride musical would be inconceivable.
Not that a Princess Bride musical would be all bad. In fact, Mandy Patinkin could reprise his role as a singing Inigo Montoya — he's definitely got the vocal chops. (Collider)
