You don't need to have lived through an '80s prom to understand what kind of mark high school seniors left on the fashion world during the decade. After all, once you see so much taffeta and metallic lamé it's really hard to forget it. But, leave it to the wonderfully weird Tilda Swinton to revive the slow-dance staple in a way that would make any prom queen proud.
The dress Swinton wore to the Snowpiercer premiere had all the telltale signs of a made-in-the-'80s masterpiece: the off-the-shoulder silhouette; the mysterious gathering of fabric along the waistline; and a sweet, polka-dot print. But, for the record, Tilda did not look like an extra from a John Hughes movie. Her Schiaparelli frock made these details feel new and fresh. The neck was wide but high, those side bits were tied up in awesome knots, and the pastel-blue dots perfectly clashed with the maroon dress while complimenting Swinton's simple, pointed pumps. This throwback felt much more sophisticated than we remember the first time around. Call off the competition and hand this lady a tiara!
