Lorde Fights Against The Paparazzi In A Twitter Rant

Lorde continued her no-holds-barred approach to pop stardom this past weekend by calling out the paparazzi. She echoed Cara Delevingne's Twitter rant from last month, sharing how unsafe the prying eyes of photographers makes her feel: "[sic] i understand that this comes with the territory," Lorde tweeted. "i do not understand why I should be complacent."

Lorde took the rant one step further, however, and called out one paparazzo in particular: Simon Runting.

Runting is famous for shamelessly following celebrities. Lorde referenced his 2013 spat with Rihanna, when the "Umbrella" singer voiced her distaste for the photographer, as well. "[sic] i refuse to stay complicit and i refuse to stay passive about men systematically subjecting me to extreme fear," Lorde continued to tweet.

Runting was the defendant in a historic 2004 privacy case in New Zealand (Lorde's old stomping ground), which centered around his photos of a Kiwi TV host's then infant twins. In the case Hosking vs. Runting, the judge found the publishing of the images to be legal, though allowed for the host to sue Runting to damages.

Lorde's recent retort is merely another example of celebrities standing up to the paparazzi. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's campaign against photographers shooting children has become something of a success, and Delevingne's April venting session added more fuel to the fire. Now, with Lorde's opinion out in the ether, the problem of lack of privacy for the rich and famous will likely be a buzz issue once again. Perhaps we'll even get a song out of it, too. (Cosmopolitan)
